this example shows in a very precise way the missing link between music and dance in the passage from the rural to the urban context.

the urban version of kujawiak has lost all the intricacies of its rural conterpart. the form is simplified and uniform. the improvisatory element is practically excluded. the music played is a set version in evenly measured time units. the close inter-relation between the dancer and musician no longer exists.

• line 1. of the synoptic table shows the melody as performed by the urban circles.
• line 2. contains their way of dancing. it differs very much from the village prototype on which this national dance version of kujawiak has been fashioned.
• line 3. shows the same melody as executed by the village musician applying organic rhythm, which is not strictly measured.
• line 4. contains a scheme of dancing as followed by the villagers in their traditional way of dancing.
